Sure. Any coach has a old salt from their past to call in a crunch. Those are usually the best kind. But when your bosses are putting a mentor on you, it's usually a bad deal.

We have a mentoring program at my place of work. It usually amounts to nothing more than a pay stipend for a senior employee, who ends up doing jack squat for the mentee. Years ago I was asked to be a mentor for someone. I had a higher up later come to me "concerned" about my mentee that he didn't like the way he was doing his job. I told him "the mentee is fine, don't worry about it" and I wasn't exactly diplomatic about it. The mentee is still around after almost 20 years and well respected. However, I was never asked to be a mentor again, which is fine by me.

Anecdotal, I know.

But to your point, mentoring at this point in Fu's tenure isn't worth the trouble.
